Jagged Edge {Cover and Book Design}

Jagged Edge (2020) by Cindy Aronson and Tamara Herman is the second novel published by The Soap Box Press. I had the privilege of designing the cover, interior, and eBook.

The cover depicts a Knight chess piece, a symbol key to Jagged Edge with its use of chess imagery, viewed and distorted behind broken glass—an allusion to one of the protagonists’s childhood trauma as well as nod to one of the story’s mysteries.

Trial {Cover Design}

Trial (2019) by Christopher M. Briggs is the first novel published by The Soap Box Press and the first novel cover I had the opportunity to design.

The historical fiction novel follows the events of the Currie Libel Trial and the perspectives of those directly and indirectly affected by the trial. Sir Arthur Currie sues the Port Hope Evening Guide over an editorial accusing him of needlessly ordering Canadian soldiers to their death at Mons on the last day of the war, thus bringing about one of the key inspirations for the cover’s imagery. The cover depicts a lone soldier passing through a No Man’s Land made up of newspapers and discarded papers, borrowing the likeness and imagery of the iconic photographs from WW1 of a lone soldier passing through No Man’s Land.

It was nominated for the 2020 Eric Hoffer Book Award and was a finalist for the Eric Hoffer Grand Prize, as well as the First Horizon Award for new authors and the da Vinci Eye Award for cover artwork.
